RSI Prevention for Programmers: What the Research Actually Says

Repetitive strain injury is preventable but the interventions people focus on aren't always the ones with the best evidence.

The strongest evidence

Breaks. Not fancy ones — just breaks. Micro-pauses every 20–30 minutes reduce discomfort and measured muscle load in the forearm and shoulder. Larger breaks every 60–90 minutes compound the benefit.

Neutral wrist posture and elbows at or slightly above the desk surface reduce median-nerve compression risk. This is a setup issue more than a gadget issue.

Where the evidence is weaker

Ergonomic keyboards help some people a lot and others not at all — the meta-analysis is mixed. If you already have symptoms, they're worth trying. If you don't, the strongest predictor is still time-in-position, not layout.

Wrist braces during the day are usually a bad idea — they weaken the surrounding muscles. Night-time use for specific conditions (like carpal tunnel) has better support.

The uncomfortable conclusion

The best intervention is doing less of the thing that hurts. If your hands are complaining, you cannot buy your way out — you need to reduce keyboard hours, add real recovery, or change the movement pattern (dictation, voice coding, different input device).
